GEM of the DAY: THE FLIM-FLAM MAN

Before The Sting made con men into the popular rogues they are, George C. Scott was introducing the world to the tricks of the shady trade as a Southern grifter, aka a ‘Flim-Flam Man,’ who takes his new protégé – portrayed by Michael Sarrazin (They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Sometimes a Great Notion) – on a whirlwind tour of the backroads and hamlets where suckers are truly born every minute.

SECTION SPOTLIGHT: GANGSTER FILMS

The Gangster Films shelf is one of Movie Madness’ obscure delights, a black-and-white treasure trove chock full of classic  titles like Bullets or Ballots, Dillinger (both the 1945 & 1973 versions),  G-Men, Highway 301, Lepke, Johnny Cool, Ma Parker’s Killer Brood, The Purple Gang and dozens others. Not to be confused with Film Noir, Gangster Films focus on the organized crime flicks of post-war America. While these films retain elements of noir, overall they’re grittier and more violent, albeit by 1950s-standards.

You can find the Gangster shelf on the bottom shelf of the Film Noir section in our front room.
