Chinatown (1974) - WALL TELEPHONE
This 1930’s wall phone appears in the “Fake” Mrs. Mulwray’s kitchen when she is murdered and the cops have called Jake (Jack Nicholson) to come down there with the hopes of incriminating him. With the body in plain sight, they grill Jake in the doorway and point out his phone number written on the wall right above this phone. CHINATOWN was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Director (Roman Polanski), Best Actor (Jack Nicholson) and Best Actress (Faye Dunaway). The film took home the Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay.
The phone, which was owned by the Ellis Property Co., was loaned out to Paramount Pictures in 1974 for use in this film. Movie Madness purchased this piece from the June 2002 Profiles in History auction.
